Why wind energy?
Latvia's National Energy and Climate Plan 2021-2030 foresees that 800 megawatts (MW) of wind
power capacity should be installed in Latvia in 2030 in order to contribute to Latvia’s
progress towards energy independence, security and climate neutrality, while at the same
time reducing GHG emissions, preserving natural diversity and developing a circular economy.
Renewable energy has been a hot topic in Latvia for more than 15 years, due to the
fast-flowing climate changes, renewable technologies have taken centre stage on both the
Latvian and global agenda, providing a sustainable and carbon-neutral solution to this
global problem.
Wind energy is a source of energy that is completely self-renewing. When the sun is active,
there are constant flows of air in the atmosphere which do not require the extraction,
transport or combustion of raw materials. The source of wind energy is inexhaustible and the
good news is that Latvia has it in abundance.
Wind power is the cheapest and most accessible to produce large amount of green electricity.
Studies show that wind conditions in Talsi and Ventspils regions are excellent. As the area
is used for forest management, there are no residences in the area of the wind farm, which
means that the disturbance caused to the public is minimal. Moreover, there is a good
network of forest roads in the area, thanks to which fewer roads need to be built for the
construction and maintenance of the wind farm.
